LGMC statement following London’s vigil for Orlando

The London Gay Men’s Chorus is an organisation that believes passionately that music has the power to heal and to inspire, to lift souls and to unite people in times of joy and sorrow.

We understand how vital it is that the LGBT community has access to safe and supportive spaces – community groups such as the LGMC, bars and clubs – as a sanctuary. A place to express yourself. A place to call home.

The horrific attack that took place in Pulse Nightclub, Orlando sent shockwaves through the entire LGBT community in London and beyond. London is a global city and the LGMC is made up of gay men from around the world. The LGBT community is equally global and we stand strong alongside our LGBT brothers and sisters around the world. An attack on one section of our community is an attack on us all.

Singing at the vigil organised in Soho on Monday, we hoped that we could offer a space to reflect and remember those whose lives were taken too soon. We hoped we could send a message to Orlando and to the wider world of support and love.

In 1999 we sang in the aftermath of the Admiral Duncan bombing. 17 years on and we are still singing against homophobic attacks. Hope in the face of hate.

The response to this performance has been incredibly overwhelming and humbling for all of our members. We would like to take the opportunity to send our thanks to all those who shared this moment with us, and sent us messages of thanks and love. It helps spur us on to continue singing – for equality, and for those who have gone too early.
